Catherine Trieschmann’s plays include Crooked, How the World Began, The Most Deserving, One House Over and Holy Laughter. They have been produced Off-Broadway at the Women’s Project Theater, in London at the Bush Theater and with Out-of-Joint at the Arcola Theatre, South Coast Repertory, the Denver Theater Center for Performing Arts, Milwaukee Repertory Theater, Actors Theatre of Louisville, Geva Theater Center, Florida Stage, Rivendell Theatre Ensemble, and more. Internationally, her plays have been produced in Canada, Australia, Ireland and Turkey. She has received commissions from South Coast Repertory, Manhattan Theater Club, the Denver Center for Performing Arts, Geva Theater Center and Milwaukee Repertory Theater. She’s the recipient of the Weissberger Award, the Otis Guernsey New Voices Award from the William Inge Playwriting Festival, a two-time Edgerton New Play Awardee and was hailed by the The New York Times as having “a big, accomplished writer’s voice.” Her plays are published by Concord Theatricals, Dramatic Publishing and Methuen/Bloomsbury. She lives in a small town in Western Kansas.
About the Selected Play
In “The Dust People,” Johanna is a woman of the land, farming the same plot that’s been in her family for generations. When a young, idealistic couple with big ideas about sustainable energy and wind farms buys the farm next door, she’s convinced they and their ambitious eco-friendly plans won’t last. Their rural community is thrown into chaos by a murder, forcing every resident to reckon with the winds of change.
About the Residency Program
BETC’s new play development program, Generations, features work by parent playwrights with children under 18. The name comes from BETC’s goals for the program: to welcome all generations into the theater to see new plays and empower playwrights to generate new work.
Each season, BETC selects one playwright through a national competition to join us in Boulder for a one-week residency. During the residency week, the playwright works with a professional director, dramaturg, and actors to develop the selected script. The week concludes with a public reading and post-reading conversation. Our 2022 winning play will be workshopped in February 2023.
Reading Date, Time, and Venue
BETC’s public reading of THE DUST PEOPLE will be held in the Grace Gamm Theater at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder, on Tuesday, February 21 at 7 p.m. The reading is free to attend but advance registration is required due to limited seating. Register here.
