BETC announces comeback season

October 22, 2021

Butterfly Effect Theatre of Colorado (BETC) is proud to announce its 2022 season.

The season will open at the Dairy Arts Center in Boulder in February with “Fourteen Funerals” by 2021 BETC Generations winner Eric Pfeffinger. Audiences will return to in-person performances at BETC with this wry comedy about family, friendship and the stories we tell about people we may never really know. Eric Pfeffinger has been hailed in his past work as “brilliantly intelligent and laudably ambitious” (Chicago Tribune) with “amazing comic sensibilities” (American Theatre) while his work “threads a delicate needle between satire and think piece” (Colorado Sentinel).

The BETC Theatre Truck hits the road again this summer, bringing great theatre to Colorado communities. The truck will tour two plays—to be announced—and be available outdoors and free to audiences.

BETC will return to the Dairy in the fall with the humorous and profoundly timely play “The Children” by Lucy Kirkwood. This unforgettable three-character drama asks what kind of repairs we owe to a damaged world. Hailed as “completely successful as an eco-thriller, bristling with chills and suspense” (The New York Times), “The Children” was first performed at the Royal Court Jerwood Theatre Downstairs and was produced on Broadway by the Manhattan Theatre Club and the Royal Court Theatre.

BETC will wrap its production season of plays in the Dairy’s intimate Carsen Theatre with “The Royale,” by Marco Ramirez, postponed from the 2021 season due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Inspired by the life of Jack Johnson, the first African-American heavyweight world champion, “The Royale” is “a stylized, blazingly theatrical triumph that keeps audience members on the edge of their seats” (Miami Herald). It has been produced at Center Theatre Group and Lincoln Center Theater.

In addition to its season of nationally-acclaimed theatre works, BETC will also expand its boundary-breaking programming, including Generations, a new play development residency; Science Shorts, a new play series; and (inter)Gen, an intergenerational playwriting class.
